Van Arkel Prize
Since 1990, the section has awarded the Van Arkel Prize every two years to a young chemist who has conducted high-quality scientific research in the field of inorganic and physical chemistry. The prize consists of a certificate and a cash award of €2,500. The prize is intended for the author of the best thesis or other scientific publications (e.g. edited within an industrial context) of comparable importance to a thesis, defended or published within a period of two years, in this case in 2024 and 2025.
Anton Eduard van Arkel
The prize is named after Anton Eduard van Arkel (1893-1976), professor of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry at Leiden University (1934-1964). His research focused on bridging the gap between the physics and chemistry of molecules and crystals. His approach was based on what was then a revolutionary electrostatic approach to the bonds in inorganic crystals and the dipolar interactions between molecules. In this way, he contributed to a systematic classification of all kinds of inorganic compounds and to the understanding of their physical properties, including solubility, stability and vapour pressure.
