Golden Flame 2025

Winner of the Golden Flame Award 2025

Li Wienen

Optimization of RNA isolation for Tetraselmis convolutae, ROC Noorderpoort

The Golden Flame jury has selected Li Wienen's report, written as part of her MBO training as a biological medical analyst at ROC Noorderpoort Groningen, for her graduation research at the European Research Institute for Biology of Ageing (ERIBA), as the winner of the Golden Flame 2025.

During her internship, Li developed methods for isolating RNA from the photosynthetic alga Tetraselmis convolutae. Although photosynthetic algae are known to be one of the most difficult organisms from which to isolate RNA and DNA, Li succeeded thanks to her determination, enthusiastic attitude, and meticulous work. This resulted in an important breakthrough in the research, and the quality of her work far exceeded expectations.

The research report was well structured; the theoretical background was described very carefully and clearly, and the report contained a clear presentation of the results. During her presentation, Li was able to explain the theoretical background, methodology, and results in a clear and accessible manner. She also answered the jury's questions with confidence and expertise. Thanks to her dedication and thorough approach, the project was successfully completed and her results form a solid basis for further research. Based on these outstanding achievements, the jury is pleased to nominate Li Wienen as the winner of the Gouden Vlam 2025.

The second prizes were awarded to:

  • Aysenur Kirazci, ROC Noorderpoort
HPLC Method for the Analysis of Cefazolin in Syringes
  • Daphne van der Veen, Aventus
FTIR Spectroscopy for the Differentiation of E. coli O78, non-O78, K99, and non-K99 Strains
