KNCV Van Marumpenning

1. The KNCV Marumpenning Award is presented by the KNCV board once every two years based on a recommendation made to the board by the selection committee.
2. The prize consists of the Van Marumpenning, a consideration, and a platform, communication channel, or other mouthpiece agreed upon with the candidate and the KNCV, such as the website, C2W, or a KNCV event.

The selection committee.

1. The selection committee is appointed by the KNCV Board based on nominations of potential candidates by the sitting members of the selection committee, the sections of the KNCV, and the KNCV Board, coordinated by the KNCV board member responsible for awards.
2. The selection committee consists of a chair and at least four members who are actively working in the various fields covered by the KNCV or who are experts in science communication. One of the members is also a board member of the KNCV.
3. The selection committee elects its chair from among its members.
4. Members of the selection committee are appointed for four years with a possible extension of four years.
5. The selection committee assesses the nominations submitted on the basis of the criteria set out in the Criteria section.
6. If a member of the selection committee has ties to the candidate, he or she will not participate in the deliberations.
7. The selection committee will maintain confidentiality in its work with regard to the names of the candidates.

The candidates.

1. Candidates may be nominated by members of the KNCV or by sections of the KNCV.
2. Individuals or non-profit organizations that have made a significant contribution to communicating to a broad audience about the fields covered by the KNCV, including chemistry, life sciences, biotechnology, and process technology, are eligible for the award. The candidate's goal is to raise the profile of these fields and their practitioners in the public domain. The candidate has developed outstanding communication activities, for example in (science) education, outreach, or citizen science.
3. Both young candidates and candidates with a long track record, who have been making a special contribution for many years, can be nominated.
4. Board members and employees of the KNCV are not eligible for the KNCV Van Marumpenning.

The nomination

1. The KNCV office invites all KNCV members to submit nominations. The nomination must be accompanied by:

• • An argumentation clearly stating why, in the opinion of the nominator, the candidate has made an important contribution to communicating the KNCV's fields of expertise to a wide audience, with reference to the Criteria.
  • A concise CV.
  • If possible, examples of the communication (written, film, tweets, vlogs, etc.).

The criteria

1. The selection committee assesses the nominations submitted on the following criteria:

• The target group
  
  • Which target group was the communication aimed at and for what reason?
  • Was there a conscious choice and justification for the target group?
  • How broad and diverse was the target group?
  • To what extent did the communication reach the target group?
• The quality of the content
  
  • Was the content of the communication of good quality?
  • Was the communication based on the right expertise?
  • What was the degree of breadth and/or depth in the communication?
  • To what extent was the communication representative of chemistry, life sciences, biotechnology, process technology, and those who practice them?
• The form(s) of communication used by the candidate
  
  • Did the form of communication match the objective and the target group?
  • Was the form of communication of good quality?
  • Was the form of communication original and/or inspiring?
  • Was the form of communication one-off or recurring in nature?
• The result
  
  • Is there a clear objective and has the goal been achieved?
  • To what extent has the communication contributed to raising the profile of chemistry, life sciences, biotechnology, process technology, and those who practice them among a broad audience?
  • To what extent has the candidate achieved visible positive effects, such as increased knowledge among a target group, follow-up dialogue, or a change in attitude or opinion among a target group?
• Normative criteria
  
  • To what extent does the communication align with the objectives of the KNCV?

The procedure

1. The selection committee reaches a decision through a transparent and balanced process involving the following steps: ranking of the candidates by the committee members, discussion of the candidates, revised ranking, followed by a selection in a committee meeting.
2. The selection committee may be assisted in its work by a number of experts working in the Netherlands. These experts provide their advice in writing.
3. The selection committee submits its recommendation in writing to the KNCV board. The material on which this recommendation is based must be enclosed with it. A brief assessment is given of the three best candidates and, for the winner, an explanation is provided, based on the above criteria, as to why this candidate is preferred over the other candidates.
4. The selection committee will issue its recommendation based on a majority vote.
5. The KNCV board will adopt the committee's recommendation unless there are compelling reasons not to do so. In that case, the KNCV board will clearly indicate why it is deviating from the recommendation. In the event of rejection, the prize will not be awarded.
6. Announcement of the winner, sending information to the persons who nominated candidates, presentation of the award, publication of the considerations, etc. will take place as described in the “KNCV Van Marumpenning” script.
7. The chair of the selection committee will draw up a statement of reasons, which will be approved by the KNCV board at least one month before the Van Marumpenning is awarded.
8. The award ceremony will preferably take place at a KNCV meeting.
9. In all cases not covered by these regulations, the KNCV board will decide.
