Golden Spatula 2015

Winner of the Golden Spatula 2015

Michiel Uiterweerd

“Synthetic Studies on a sialic acid-based Carbocyclic Glycomimetic” Arnhem and Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences

This year, the Golden Spatula jury nominated Michiel Uiterweerd's thesis, written as part of his bachelor's degree program at Arnhem and Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences, for the Golden Spatula award.

The report clearly and pleasantly describes the research Michiel conducted during his graduation internship in the Synthetic Organic Chemistry Group at Wageningen UR.

Michiel's research focused on the synthesis of sialic acid derivatives. Sialic acids are important for intercellular communication in the body. By creating artificial sialic acid derivatives, the functioning of enzymes can be studied. Michiel's research is part of a larger project involving the synthesis of a derivative that can bind irreversibly to enzymes, with the aim of developing an activity-based probe that makes it possible to study this intercellular communication. Michiel's work is a major step towards the synthesis of this derivative molecule.

In a short period of four months, Michiel successfully completed the first 10 steps of the synthesis. Various reactions from across the full spectrum of organic chemistry were applied to these experimentally challenging molecules. When one of these reactions yielded an unexpected product, Michiel clarified the structure using 2D NMR. The proposed synthesis route was then modified and shortened based on the new compound.

In his report, Michiel describes in a concise, precise, and clear manner how he conducted his research. He concludes his report with a description of the eight follow-up steps to arrive at the target molecule and offers suggestions for an alternative approach.

His supervisors describe Michiel as someone who stands out for his independence, accuracy, and skill in organic synthesis, and someone who does not let unexpected setbacks throw him off course.

Based on the above facts, the selection committee has concluded that Michiel is an excellent candidate for a nomination for the Golden Spatula.
