De prijs is in het leven geroepen door vier alumni van de Rijks Universiteit Groningen: prof. E.J.R. Sudholter, prof. E.W. Meijer, prof. B.L. Feringa en prof. H. Hiemstra. Zij vernoemden de prijs naar prof. H.J. Backer die vanaf 1916 tot aan zijn pensioen hoogleraar organische chemie aan de RUG was. Hij overleed in 1959. Uit het legaat van de hoogleraar en de co-sponsoring van de KNCV ontstond het Backer-fonds waaruit het prijzengeld jaarlijks wordt uitgekeerd.
