PCCP was formed by the merger of two major physical chemistry journals Faraday Transactions and Berichte der Bunsen-Gesellschaft and is currently owned and run by thirteen learned and professional societies. PCCP is the journal of choice for fast publication of cutting edge physical chemistry and chemical physics.

PCCP is run by an Ownership Board, on which all the member societies have equal representation. At the moment, there are thirteen participating societies, although more are expected to join the venture soon. The thirteen societies are:
