Samenvatting:

Kunststoffen zijn materialen met een bijna oneindige variatie aan eigenschappen. Plastic producten zijn overdadig aanwezig in ons dagelijks leven. De perceptie van het grote publiek is overwegend dat plastic een inferieure vervanger is van natuurproducten zoals hout, karton, stenen en metalen. Vaak worden inderdaad kunststoffen gebruikt om die natuurlijke producten te vervangen, maar doorgaans doet de kwaliteit bepaald niet onder voor natuurproducten. Belangrijker is nog dat polymeerchemici “une mer a boire” aan mogelijkheid hebben om samenstellingen te maken voor zeer hoogwaardige toepassingen, waar zelfs de natuur niet aan kan tippen. Ondanks de bijna onvoorstelbare kleine afmetingen van polymeerketens, kunnen polymeerchemici allerlei “kunstjes” toepassen om structuur van de kunststoffen, en dus de eigenschappen, naar hun hand te zetten. In de lezing zal de deksel van de trukendoos een beetje worden opgetild. Onderwerpen zoals hyperbranched coatings, antibacterial coatings, self healing coatings, tissue engineering and polyrotaxanes zullen de revue passeren.  

Curriculum Vitae Ton Loontjes

Ton Loontjens (18-05-45) is principal scientist macro-organic chemistry at DSM Research in Geleen, in the Netherlands and part time professor at the university of Groningen. His responsibility is to search for new opportunities in performance materials at academia, on conferences, in personal contacts, in literature, etc. and translate them into industrial projects. 

More specific areas of interest are to design and make smart polymers with unique functionalities for biomedical applications. Particularly, the interaction of polymers with prokaryotic (bacteria) and eukaryotic (mammal) cells is a main area of interest.

He started his study chemistry at the university of Nijmegen in 1969 and received in 1972 the Unilever award (for the best student in chemistry of the university of Nijmegen). He finished his study in 1975 (cum laude) and started at DSM research as leader of the polypropylene polymerization group. In 1980 he became workgroup leader on polyethylene and construction resins (unsaturated polyester resins). From 1985 until 1992 he was head of a polymer chemistry department on coating resins, melamine resins and stabilization of polymers. Then he was appointed as head of a polymer chemistry department on polyesters, nylons and coatings. Since 1995 he holds the position of principal scientist. In 2005 he received his PhD degree on the thesis “Performance Materials by a Modular Approach”. In 2005 he has been appointed as part time professor for biomedical polymers at the university of Groningen. Loontjens is co-author of more than 60 publications and about 70 patents.
